HUDDERSFIELD has been recognised as one of the top places in the country for hip surgery.

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust – which runs Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax – was recognised in Dr Foster’s Hospital Guide as offering some of the best care following a broken hip.

The annual guide provides a detailed analysis into NHS Trusts to enable patients to make informed decisions about their care and help set standards of overall care.

CHT was commended for its speed in seeing patients who come in with broken hips, or seeking neck of femur treatment.

It was among the top Foundation Trusts in the country – with only 16.8% of patients waiting more than two days for an operation which compared to the national average of 30%.

The trust which has a specialist team of doctors, nurses, therapists and managers had worked on improving the time of care from A&E through to the wards and into surgery.

According to Dr Foster’s report a fast time is crucial to how well a patient recovers after surgery.

Associate director of nursing Clare Brearley said: “We know that to have the best recovery, our patients – many of whom are elderly – need to be operated on as soon as possible so we aim for the surgery to be carried out within 24 to 36 hours of our patients coming into A&E.

“A lot of work has been carried out in this field and we are delighted that the care here – which is a huge team effort – has been recognised in this way.”

The report assessed all aspects of pre-surgery, including hydration, pain relief and underlying medical conditions.

Medical director David Wise said: “Overall the performance reported for the Trust in this guide reflects the good service provided by the Trust to our local population.

“We continue to strive to improve care to all patients and recognise that standards must continually rise so the local service can continually improve”.
