Huddersfield’s White-out Wednesday saw snow fall for a full 26 HOURS in places, according to Examiner weatherman Paul Stevens.

The amount of snow that fell was well above predictions – as much 28cm (11 inches) at Holme Moss and 17cm (6.7 inches) at areas above 500ft, such as Salendine Nook.

There was only a covering in town centres – but it was still enough to get rush-hour traffic grinding to a halt.

Met Office-trained forecaster Paul said: “As we know it snowed and snowed and snowed, almost for a full 26 hours.

“At its peak there was 3cm falling per hour between 9.30am and 12.30pm.”

Paul said the temperature never rose above freezing all day and hovered around the -1C mark.

He added: “If the temperature had been just a single degree warmer we would have had rain instead of snow. That shows just how marginal this snow event was.”

Tonight (Thurs) is expected to be icy but tomorrow will feel much less cold with the thermometer creeping up to 6C.

Paul said rain would sweep in for the commute home tomorrow with Saturday set to be breezy, chilly but mostly dry.

Sunday’s temperature would be around 6C with showers. Next week will be wet and windy, possibly stormy at times.
