Heavy snow showers blighted the drive to work this morning with a slow-go on the roads  and schools were affected this morning.

Commuters were caught in queues of traffic as snow fell across Kirklees and Calderdale.

Trans-Pennine routes were the worst affected with outside lanes fully covered on the M62 at junction 22 Rishworth Moor and the A58 slow going above Ripponden.

Queues formed in both directions on the M62 as further snow showers settled on overnight falls.

Examiner weatherman Paul Stevens said the snow showers would continue throughout the day, gradually dying out towards evening time.

The A57 Snake Pass was closed as up to 15cm (six inches) of snow fell over Holme Moss.

At lower levels there was up to 5cm (two inches) and a slight covering in the towns.

Although bus routes weren't too badly affected, there was some drama on steeper roads with a close shave for this double decker and its passengers.

Paul said: “The snowfall came as we expected about 8.15pm last night and has continued on and off throughout the night.

“The snow will gradually peter out by 6pm, though there are one or two heavier bursts around.”

There will be a slow thaw tomorrow with rain, sleet and milder weather coming for the weekend.

The Highways Agency warned drivers of hazardous driving conditions on the M62 between J21 A640 (Milnrow) and J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor).

The Elland by-pass (A629 Calderdale Way) was down to one lane with cones restricting traffic.

Leeds Bradford Airport was closed early this morning and a handful of UK flights were cancelled.

On the railways, Northern Rail reported minor delays.
