RAILWAY stations across Kirklees and Calderdale could benefit from a £3.25bn renovation scheme, announced by Network Rail on November 12.

Network Rail, which manages Britain’s railways and stations, has selected 80% of the country’s 2,500 stations for improvement by 2014.

Among those earmarked are Huddersfield, Mirfield and Brighouse.

Sums spent will range from tens of thousands of pounds to tens of millions.

Improvements could include new toilets and waiting rooms, longer platforms, bigger ticket offices, better lighting and new lifts and stairways.

And Network Rail is appealing for suggestions from rail travellers.

A three-month research project starts later this month including online and telephone surveys and focus groups.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We have picked a list of stations which we think need improvements.

“But we want to know what passengers want so we encourage them to go online and tell us.

“It might be CCTV or a shelter with a heater.”
