A MAN has appeared in court accused of raping a woman at gunpoint.

Awais Khan, of Willow Lane East in Hillhouse, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He faces charges of rape, possession of an imitation firearm and threatening to kill the woman.

The alleged offence took place at around 1am on Thursday (August 23) morning at Alder Street, Hillhouse – notorious as a red light area.

Bill Astin, prosecuting, said the woman worked as a prostitute in the area.

Khan, 22, is alleged to have asked the woman for sex and walked with her to a secluded area of woodland.

There he allegedly pulled the firearm, an air pistol, out of his jacket.

Khan is then alleged to have threatened to kill the victim before raping her.

The accountancy student at Bradford College, who is originally from Pakistan, spoke only to confirm his personal details.

Dressed in a plain white T-shirt with blue trousers, he listened to the proceedings with the help of an interpreter.

Magistrates refused his solicitor’s application for bail.

They remanded Khan in custody until his first appearance before Leeds Crown Court on August 31.
