AN international student at Huddersfield University will represent Yorkshire in the International Student Awards.

Mexican Everardo Gutiérrez–Enríquez has been selected as one of the 12 finalists from a total of 1,300 students from 120 countries.

The International Student Awards celebrate the contribution made by overseas students at UK universities.

Huddersfield student Everardo has crossed continents and witnessed a great deal of suffering, both as a lay pastoral support worker and charity worker.

The awards are run by the British Council, the UK’s international cultural relations body.

The regional winners have been chosen after three rounds of judging.

Everardo, as the Yorkshire and Humber candidate, has already won a £1,000 prize.

He attends a two-day celebration and awards ceremony in London today and Wednesday, where he could emerge as the national winner, scooping £2,000.

He is completing a BSc degree in psychology and counselling at Huddersfield.

He is also involved in a charity that seeks to help people from a Latin American background living in the UK.
