STUDENTS are being invited to save money by taking part in the Manic Monday market scheme.

Stallholders at Queensgate Market and Huddersfield Open Market, in Brook Street, are offering a discount to National Union of Students cardholders on Mondays.

Some are offering 10% discounts while others have seasonal offers on food or special offers on promotional goods.

Traders will be varying their offers each Manic Monday to attract new customers.

Participating stallholders will display a sign for the scheme, which starts on Monday, May 16.

Maria Cotton, the markets’ business manager, said: “Several of our stallholders already offer discounts to students but we want to encourage more students into the markets by co-ordinating the offers and jointly promoting them.

“The stallholders want the flexibility to choose their offer and vary it to meet demand, so the council has provided branded NUS wipe-clean boards to participating stalls.”

Traders will also be promoting their ‘Live Love Local’ initiative to the students.

This campaign was launched last year to highlight locally-sourced produce which meet Farmers Market criteria.

Stalls with local produce on sale display the approved logo. This lets the buying public know they are supporting the local economy when making their purchases.
