HUDDERSFIELD University fashion student Rachel Vickers is heading for the High Street.

She has become the overall winner of the River Island Graduate Fashion Week Womenswear Design competition.

Rachel’s dance-inspired design for a jumpsuit for spring/summer this year wowed the River Island judges, who will now make up the garment to be sold in stores.

Rachel, 21, also received £500 as part of the prize, and will see her design on the River Island display stand at the Graduate Fashion Show in London in June.

Now in her fourth year of the BA (Hons) Fashion Design with Manufacture, Marketing and Promotion course, Rachel took her inspiration for her winning design from her ‘other passion’ – dance.

“Before I came to university I danced for about 14 years, and I loved it. I used the freedom of dance as inspiration for my final collection, and I thought it would be the kind of thing that River Island customers would like – very bold and full of life.

“Winning the competition was a bit of a surprise. For my design to be available in River Island stores is really an amazing feeling!”
