A TEENAGER from Huddersfield has been fined for racial abuse at a protest.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, was one of a number of people held at an English Defence League rally in Stoke-on-Trent. He was fined £100 and told to pay £55 costs for racially-aggravated public order offences.

Another protestor, Anthony Cook, 22, from Shelley Road in Stockport, was fined £100 and ordered to pay £85 costs.

Six males appeared before North Staffordshire Magistrates after the EDL rally on January 23.

About 1,500 supporters protested against Islamic extremism in the Hanley area. Unite Against Fascism held a counter rally on the day.

Staffordshire Police arrested a total of 17 EDL protesters.

At the hearing, Wayne Baldwin, 41, from The Crescent in Hockley, Birmingham, was fined £180 after pleading guilty to a public order offence.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs.

Christopher Harley, 24, from Bower Street in Stockport pleaded not guilty to a racial or religious public order offence.

And Michael Gawthorpe, 18, from Crofters Way in Saughall, Cheshire, pleaded not guilty to a public order offence.

Both were bailed to re-appear at the same court on March 15 for a trial date to be fixed.

Mark Doel, 43, from Primrose Hill in Batley was charged with violent disorder and assaulting a constable.

He did not enter a plea and was bailed ahead of a committal hearing at the same court on April 6.
