A new restaurant could bring an abandoned old shop back to life.

A plan has emerged to bring the old Your Move estate agents on Cross Church Street back into use.

The prominent Huddersfield town centre premises has been lying empty for about four years.

Now a Syrian man, who moved to Britain eight years ago, has revealed plans to revamp it into a two-floor restaurant.

Ghassan Bateha has applied to Kirklees Council and hopes to get the green light in the next few weeks.

Restaurant plan for 7-9, Cross Church Street, Huddersfield.

If granted he has vowed to open the Syrian/Lebanese grill by the end of April.

Mr Bateha currently lives in London but says he is in the process of moving to Huddersfield.

He said: “We’ve signed a contract with the landlord, it’s the first time I’ve run a restaurant here but I used to when I was in Syria.

“I currently work in construction but I know a chef and we’re going to have a delicious style of fresh food.

“The speciality will be amazing grilled meats that will be the best in Huddersfield.

“It’s going to be something completely different.”

The application to Kirklees reveals the building is Grade 2 Listed and within a conservation area.

But the applicant says the insides have “very little merit” in terms of “historic architectural features”.

The plan says the revamp will remove the partition walls and suspended ceilings and create a large open plan restaurant.

The front door will be moved and the wooden windows refurbished.

Mr Bateha says he will create eight jobs and hopes to stay open until 2am most nights.

Cross Church Street has been a hotspot for late night violence over the years but police have raised no objections about the plan.
