A Huddersfield Town fan from Brighouse is celebrating after scooping £20,000 in a club jackpot draw.

Linda Carey became the 10th winner of Town’s Blue & White Foundation end-of-year draw.

The foundation, an exclusive members’ club, has raised £2m over the last decade for the club’s youth academy set-up.

The draw was made in front of 150 people at Town’s Canalside base – but Linda wasn’t there.

It was only minutes later that Linda – watching TV at home – heard about her good fortune in a phone call from Town promotions manager Karen Haigh.

Linda said: “I was sat watching the news when my phone started ringing and I recognised Karen’s voice.

“I thought it might be about my son being a mascot but when she told me I’d won £20,000 I couldn’t believe it.

“I was shaking, crying and completely speechless – which is not like me!

“I couldn’t sleep all night but it was a fantastic reason to be sleepless.”

Linda said she planned to pay of some debts and replace her 10-year-old car.

“I’m not totally sure how it is still going,” she said.

Linda, a member of the Blue & White Foundation since 2008, only became interested in football a few years ago after a chance meeting with Town commercial director Sean Jarvis.

While Linda won the big one, 10 others scooped £500 each.

They were: Andrew Wood, David Noon, Michael Wright, John Poulter, Mark Dunstan, David Brook, Stewart Gill, Richard Bell, Gerald Charlesworth and Geoff Farrell.

Gerald and Geoff were both there in person.

During the evening matchday announcer Paul Ramsden interviewed several players who had progressed through the academy.

Duane Holmes, Matt Crooks, Max Leonard and Ed Wilczynski from the current squad attended the night alongside academy manager Mark Lillis.

Former players and academy products Jon Worthington, Michael Collins and Tom Clarke also turned up in support.

As well as the £20,000 annual prize there is a weekly draw for £1,000 every Tuesday.

Town have announced that next year’s Pedal4Pounds5 – the club’s annual sponsored bike ride for the Keep it Up Campaign – will take place in April.

Riders will set off from an as yet undisclosed location on Wednesday, April 23 and arrive back at the John Smith’s Stadium ahead of the game against Leicester City on Saturday, April 26.

More details shortly.
