COUNCILLORS will decide next week on a fresh proposal to improve Huddersfield Town’s academy.

The club won planning permission in April for the upgrade to the Canalside Sports Complex on Leeds Road.

The work includes laying a third generation (3G) training pitch. The artificial surface looks like grass but gives a firmer grip, allowing for better ball control and reducing the chances of injury.

Other changes agreed in April include:

Construction of groundsman’s building, including a large vehicle turning circle

Building two portable classrooms

Relocating bowling and croquet lawns and building a new pavilion

Increasing parking spaces from 77 to 88.

The changes are needed if Town are to retain their coveted academy status with the Football Association.

The club has asked for new planning permission with three minor changes designed to create more space. These are:

Making the groundsman’s building slightly smaller than originally planned

Putting the two portable classrooms one on top of the other rather than side-by-side

Reducing the number of parking spaces from 88 to 85.

The council’s Huddersfield Planning Subcommittee will decide on the proposal at its monthly meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall from 1pm on Thursday.
