TRAIN services through Huddersfield are set to be disrupted after rail workers voted to strike.

Train drivers, conductors and station staff working for First TransPennine Express (FTPE) are planning industrial action on Wednesday and Friday next week (August 24 and 26).

Union members from ASLEF and the RMT trade unions voted for action after rejecting a 2.2 % pay increase offer.

Vernon Barker, Managing director of FTPE, said: “We are disappointed that our colleagues represented by ASLEF and the RMT have voted in favour of industrial action and we remain hopeful that a solution can be found and it can be avoided.”

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “Our members have today made it quite clear that they expect a company that makes substantial profits out of their efforts to offer more than a real-terms pay cut.

“First Transpennine’s lame excuse that it couldn’t afford a decent pay rise in the last year of its franchise has evaporated with the extension of its contract to 2015.”

Details of the train services FTPE plans to run will be published at www.tpexpress.co.uk
