Metallica, Kasabian, Elbow and Dolly Parton are headlining the famous Glastonbury Festival next week.

And joining them on the bill in a Somerset field will be the unlikely figure of Huddersfield energy expert Prof Bob Cywinski.

The 62-year-old lecturer from the University of Huddersfield has been invited to take part in two debates on energy at the festival.

He’ll be camping out overnight in a field and intends to make the most of the full festival experience.

But he doesn’t expect an easy ride as one of his jobs will be to champion the cause of nuclear energy to an audience of festival fans he expects to be more keen on wind and solar power.

Prof Cywinski is Dean of the Graduate School and a world expert on physics and applied sciences.

He is in demand across the world for his views on nuclear energy and has just returned from filming in Norway for a BBC documentary on energy with presenter and geologist Iain Stewart.

The guitar-playing scientist said: “ I have just been asked to “perform” at Glastonbury at the end of next week.

“I won’t be playing my guitar but I will be speaking on energy on the Friday, and engaging in a debate on energy on the Saturday.

“It’s not often a physicist gets to play a major rock festival, although I did a similar “gig” at the Beacons Festival in Skipton last year.

“I’ve been invited to Glastonbury by Winston Cuthbert, who is organising an energy debate in the Alternative tent. The following day I’m taking part in a big debate about energy and I’m camping out for the night. I’ve checked on the weather forecast and they are looking at rain, so I could well get the full festival experience”.

Prof Cywinski, who has worked at Huddersfield since 2008, admits he is a big fan of Neil Young, right through from his early folk days to his later stuff.

And he’s hoping to catch up with 70s band Blondie while at Glastonbury.
