CABINET members will next week vote on Calderdale’s commitment to an academy in the borough.

Plans for the academy, part sponsored by Huddersfield University, will be discussed at Monday’s meeting of Calderdale Council’s cabinet.

They will give the go-ahead to start the tendering process which will lead to a developer being selected for 1,500 place academy at the Holmfield site in North Halifax.

Huddersfield University is one of three partners in the proposal, along with Calderdale College, Calderdale Council and the Diocese of Wakefield.

If councillors back the plan, the authority will enter into a formal contract for the academy’s design and build. Initially four bidders expressed an interest but one later pulled out.

Two companies have now been invited to move forward to the final stage of selection. It is expected that the new academy building will be completed by September 2012.
