A MAGISTRATE scolded a university student for not knowing better when he swore at police officers during a night out.

Arron Parchment, 20, was at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court charged with resisting an officer in the execution of his duty.

The bench heard that police had been called to reports of a disturbance on John William Street in the early hours of December 4.

When officers approached Parchment, a Huddersfield University student, he swore at them and ran away.

When police caught up with him he continued to swear and they struggled to handcuff him.

Parchment, of Clare Hill, was not represented in court.

He admitted that his language had been unacceptable and that police had only been trying to do their job.

He said he had been under the influence of alcohol and Class B drugs at the time.

When asked what he did for a living Parchment replied that he was studying information, communications and technology.

Chairman Cath Waddington told him this made his behaviour worse.

She said: “You engaged in absolutely stupid behaviour. You tell me you’re a university student and have admitted drinking, taking cannabis and MCAT – it’s disgusting.”

Waddington was given a conditional discharge for 12 months but was ordered to pay £85 costs.
