HUDDERSFIELD had its fair share of weather misery as heavy rain battered the area.

Local weatherman Paul Stevens reported that 31mm of rain had fallen since 9am on Saturday.

This was half a month’s worth of rainfall and the reason behind so much road flooding in the town and beyond.

But by Sunday the waters had eased, with just some patchy light rain falling.

Some sleet was expected over the Pennines later as the milder air pushed north once again.

Mr Stevens, of Salendine Nook, added: “Monday is looking rather cloudy with patchy rain and generally rain by evening with the odd heavy burst.

“It’s milder but feeling cold (with) highs around 8 °C.

“Tuesday is almost a repeat with rain moving north by the evening becoming heavy at times.

“Despite the saturated ground there should be no local flooding issues.”

At the weekend the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning as torrential rain lashed northern areas of the country.

Some parts of northern England saw snow and police urged motorists to drive carefully due to treacherous road conditions.

The Environment Agency had removed its flood warnings for Huddersfield by Sunday.

It said: “River levels are falling through Sunday and there is no significant rain forecast.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”

READ MORE: Are we heading for a white Christmas?

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have slashed the odds on this December being the wettest ever, cutting them from 10/1 to 3/1.

But Mr Stevens believes there is still the possibility of a white Christmas.

He said: “Looking further ahead the global signals are for more storms on the way for the end of the week and to take us through to the end of December.

“The jet stream is moving further south so the possibility of colder incursions increase next week as we head towards Christmas.

“If we can time a polar incursion for the 24th/25th we may see some snow and it’s still a possibility.”
