THE downpour which hit Huddersfield on Sunday may have been unwelcome, but weatherman Paul Stevens says it was perfectly seasonal.

With last week's mini heatwave a distant memory, he added that we are likely to see a drop in temperatures and showers continuing into the weekend.

He said: “On Sunday we had just the kind of thundery shower we expect at this time of year – it was absolutely normal for a British summer.

“On Saturday the temperature reached 77º and what we got was a typical two or three fine days and a warm humid plume from the Bay of Biscay that met with a cold front from the Atlantic. With hot air in place the two met and there was a heavy downpour.

“It was a classic situation for a British summer.

“It wasn’t heavy compared with what hit in August, 2006. In that massive thunderstorm there was 36mm of rain.

“All we got on Sunday was 7mm.

“We’ve now gone into a much cooler spell with some showers”.
