LOCAL freemasons have handed over cheques to worthy charities.

The 17 Masonic lodges of the Huddersfield District raised a huge £12,600 in total.

The Masters of the Year of the Olympians chose Huddersfield Crossroads Caring for Carers and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Freemason spokesman Mike Steele said: “This year we tried to pick charities that are local to us.

“A lot of our members have had a lot of support from both organisations and we thought they were both worthwhile charities to support.”

The group were given a £5,000 head-start on their fundraising with a generous donation from West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd.

They raised the rest through a variety of fundraising events such as raffles, barbecues and concerts.
