Huddersfield's new leisure centre will open on Monday May 18.

The centre, said to cost around £36m, will fully open on the Monday, although the current sports centre will close for good at 9.30pm on Friday, May 15.

A family pass to the Splash Park and water slides - a major feature of the new centre - will cost £18.75 for 90 minutes, with discounts for people with Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) cards.

Adult swimmers who want to use the new pools will pay £4.40.

A squash player will pay between £4.50 and £6.75.

David Heddon, who chairs the KAL Board of Trustees, commented: “At last the wait is nearly over.

“The new Leisure Centre is an amazing building and I’m sure it will prove to be very popular with both local people and visitors to the area.

“KAL are very proud to manage this excellent new facility and we’ll be trying our best to encourage as many people as possible to visit and make use of the new leisure centre.

“The council has done a great job in providing such a wonderful facility and I am confident it will be a major success.”

The Splash Park features a fun pool for young children, water slide, sidewinder and lazy river.

There is also a 25m, eight lane pool for casual and competitive swimmers and a training pool.

The gym has over 100 cardio-vascular and resistance stations and a sprint track, plus there are studios for classes.

The centre also has a climbing wall, to be managed by the same climbing group who operate the Harrogate Climbing Centre and the Manchester Climbing Centre.

The two new sports halls will offer activities from badminton, basketball, 5-a-side football, table tennis, volleyball and short mat bowls, and there are two glass-backed squash courts and a martial arts room.

A cafe and the Reef Fun Zone, an indoor soft play area for the under 6’s, are also included.

KAL is a charitable trust which manages 14 leisure facilities and pools on behalf of Kirklees Council.

The site of the existing sports centre in Southgate has been sold to Tesco but they have scrapped plans for a new superstore.
