Four new businesses are opening at an award-winning market.

Queensgate Market was named Market of the Year in the competition run by the National Association of British Market Authorities for its work in supporting and encouraging entrepreneurs.

Now the market is welcoming four fledgling businesses.

Tattoo parlour and piercings studio Joker 666, which opens tomorrow is the realisation of a long-held ambition for biker Sean McNamara, who became an apprentice at a tattoo parlour in Nottingham before gaining a qualification in piercing.

Alice’s Kitchen, a cook and bakeware shop, has been opened by David Price-Baghurst in response to a huge demand for cake accessories.

Another new business now up and running is Patches and Pearls, owned by Jayne Zatorski, which sells dress-making fabrics and haberdashery as well as handmade dresses, skirts, cushions and craft quilts.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Rana is due to open a business this month selling a wide range of stationery goods.

Clr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet member for Place, said: “Queensgate Market offers valuable opportunities for new businesses.

“In these difficult times for high street retail our markets continue to attract new businesses and have a good and established customer base.

“Every new business that opens brings with it new and different customers and that benefit the whole market.”
