A TROUBLE-HIT Huddersfield bar has closed its doors for good.

Repeated violence problems at That Bar on King Street led police to call for the bar’s closure.

And after a four-week enforced shut down, former Giants rugby player owner Phil Joseph agreed to surrender the licence permanently, meaning the bar will not re-open.

The allegations included breaches of the bar’s licence and problems with CCTV.

Sgt Mandy Mellor, from Huddersfield Police, said: “We do our best to work with pubs and clubs in Huddersfield, but there is only so much we can do. Prior to the hearing the designated premises supervisor Phil Joseph agreed with West Yorkshire Police’s request to surrender the licence.”

She told the Examiner police had investigated a number of allegations regarding licensing issues after various incidents of violence, but felt ‘enough was enough’.

The night spot had seen its licence temporarily suspended last month until yesterday to allow police investigations.

The latest decision follows months of uncertainty about the bar’s future.

In August, councillors were told that the bar had stayed open more than six hours after it should have closed.

It also heard how police were investigating a vicious assault outside the bar which left a man with serious facial injuries.

But despite the trouble councillors had agreed to a final reprieve prior to losing its licence last month.

Bar owner Mr Joseph has played for Halifax, Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants in his rugby career.

He is currently playing with Swinton Lions.

He bought That Bar with teammate Rob Foxen towards the end of 2010.
