Traffic was halted on a section of the M62 following a lorry fire.

Highways England says traffic has been temporarily halted on the westbound carriageway between J29 M1 (Lofthouse) and J28 A650/A653 (Tingley) with vehicles backing up to J30 A642 (Rothwell).

The agency said the vehicle involved is a large HGV. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is on the scene working to bring the blaze under control. A diversion is in operation. All lanes are closed with traffic flow not expected to return to normal until about 6.30pm.

Following the M62 lorry fire, the entry slip and link roads from the M1 are now being opened and traffic is coming through. Highways England hopes to have the main carriageway open asap

M62 fire - more details emerging

First reports of a lorry on fire were received by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at 4.01pm. The DHL lorry, understood to be carrying chipboard, was well alight. Firefighters are still at the scene and the westbound carriageway remains closed

Firefightrs continue to tackle M62 blaze

Firefighters are using two large jets and a hose reel to tackle the lorry fire on the M62. Watch commander Neil Walker said three crews are in attendance and are sourcing water from a hydrant in a nearby street. There are no reports of injuries.
