DRIVERS using a quiet Shelley street have got the hump.

They are furious over a Kirklees Council traffic-calming scheme.

Council highways bosses gave the green light to Park Avenue residents' requests for a speed bump to slow down cars in and around the 30mph road late last year.

But after complaints from residents about the bump being too small, highways officials revisited the site in January and made the mound bigger.

But the saga of the sleeping policeman has taken a further twist.

Now, residents in Park Avenue - and people in neighbouring Hawthorne Way, who use Park Avenue for access - say the new, heftier hump is too big.

One resident, who didn't want to be named, said he had had enough of the bigger mound.

He said: "The car grounds on it every time you go over it. You have got to go at about half-a-mile an hour if you don't want to wreck your vehicle.

"It's just ridiculous. It's far too big."

Miffed motorists have now taken to vandalising the bump - with one cheeky prankster even posing the question: "How Big?"

A Kirklees spokesman said: "The pad was installed several weeks ago as part of a traffic-calming project across the Shelley Park estate. The scheme has been done at the request of the local community and has received widespread backing.

" This particular pad was constructed low - and complaints were received about its effectiveness.

"The work to raise it has generated a number of complaints from residents, who allege it is now too high."

But the spokesman added: "The site will be visited this week and more remedial work will be arranged, if required."
