Cyclists took on one of the most feared sections of this summer’s Tour De France as part of the annual Brian Robinson Challenge.

The 75-mile-route, in honour of the 1958 stage winning Mirfield man, saw 400 riders tackle the Holme Moss summit, set to be a hot spot for the July 6 stage through Huddersfield.

But that was just the start of the agony for the riders for the other tough uphill stretches they faced included Wessenden above Meltham, Nont Sarah’s and the Woodhead Pass.

And the last four miles were hardly an easy ride either as they went from Colnebridge all the way uphill to Huddersfield New College where the riders started and finished.

The charity challenge, in aid of Mayor of Kirklees Charity Appeal, was launched by Brian himself and the Mayor, Clr Martyn Bolt. This year the money will go to the One Community in Kirklees which gives grants to local charities and good causes and the event has raised £50,000 for charity over the last seven years.

It is a challenge, not a race and Clr Bolt said: “There were 400 riders in all and we counted them all out and we counted them all back. All did the course within eight hours and a group did it in under four which is a very respectable time for such a hilly course. In fact, I would say that the Wessenden climb is marginally tougher than Holme Moss.”

This year the event, which has run since 2007, featured a rider from as far away as Texas, USA.

Larry Linzer works for Syngenta over there and travelled over for a holiday and to take part in the challenge by joining Syngenta’s corporate team.

Another corporate team was Arriva Buses and a familiar face also taking part was BBC Look North journalist Paul Ogden.

One of the youngest riders was 15-year-old Harry Myers from Huddersfield.
