YOUNGSTERS from across Kirklees took part in an athletics event.

Hundreds of children competed in the second annual athletics festival at the Princess Mary Athletics Stadium in Liversedge.

The Sizzling Summer Athletics Festival was the culmination of community athletics events that have taken place across Kirklees during the school holidays.

Children aged from eight to 12 competed in track and field events, with medals for the winners handed out by local councillors.

Debbie Barber, Kirklees Council's sport and recreation development manager, said: "It was a celebration of the summer athletics programme and also the work they have done throughout the year.

"It is a great opportunity for them to put into practice what they have learned and to enjoy competing using top-class facilities."

The event was sponsored by Kirklees's Spen Valley Area Committee and organised by the Culture and Leisure Services Department.

It aimed to promote sport for young people and to develop a junior athletics community club at the track.
