SHEFFIELD fell silent yesterday as hundreds paid their respects to a second soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Cpl Liam Riley, 21, was a comrade of Golcar soldier Graham Shaw, both serving in the 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

They were killed by roadside bombs this month while serving as part of the 1 Coldstream Guards Battle Group near Malgir, in Helmand.

Lance-Cpl Shaw’s funeral took place in Golcar on Tuesday.

Police closed off roads in Sheffield city centre and around 500 people braved bitter temperatures outside Sheffield Cathedral, where Cpl Riley’s funeral took place.

Three coachloads of Cpl Riley’s friends and colleagues travelled to the funeral.

Mourners clapped twice more as it began the slow journey to his final resting place and a private family committal at Killamarsh Cemetery.
