Police officers were threatened by a man who escaped the scene armed with a knife.

The drama unfolded in Rufford Road, Milnsbridge, shortly after 10.45 last night as the officers called at a house to make an arrest.

They were seeking a man who was wanted on recall to prison.

Police said today that the wanted man was potentially dangerous.

A police spokesman said: "Following brief negotiations, a man within the property has made threats towards attending officers and made off from the scene armed with a knife.

"An extensive area search, including the use of a National Police Air Service helicopter, was made for the man last night and enquiries are ongoing today to locate and arrest him."

Police said the wanted man is 37 and is known to police. His identity has not been made public.

It is understood that the man told officers that he was armed and then left the address wiith a knife.

Residents in Milnsbridge and Golcar reported hearing the helicopter overhead for some time.

Rufford Road was sealed off by police, according to residents.
