A MAJOR operation is under way in West Yorkshire targeting prolific burglars.

In two weeks police have arrested 36 people, including some from Kirklees and Calderdale.

The 26 men and 10 women were detained as part of Operation Hunter.

Senior investigating officer Det Chief Insp Mick McDermott said “The team has been brought together to arrest, disrupt, prosecute and imprison known burglars who are burgling homes across West Yorkshire.

“The operation encompasses officers from all over the force.

“It will be focusing on reducing the numbers of house burglaries and cracking down on criminals travelling around West Yorkshire.

"Burglars and other criminals are using every tactic they can to remain at large.

“But we are going to be hot on their tails and aiming to use early intervention and prevention methods to cut down on the numbers of house burglaries.’’

Det Chief Insp McDermott added: “The arrests during the first two weeks are the first in a series of tactics which we will be using as we drive down the numbers of burglaries in West Yorkshire.”
