MEMBERS of the Hutchinson Deafblind Trust are calling on carers to make the most of their services.

The trust aims to give financial help to residents who suffer from severe combined hearing or sight impairment.

It was founded on the wishes of Kirklees resident Sylvia Hutchinson, who recognised the unique predicament of those looking after the deafblind as she was caring for her son John.

When she died it was her wish that the proceeds of her estate be used to help other Kirklees residents in similar situations.

The charity was registered in 2009 by a small group of trustees, who have just begun the work of raising awareness of the trust by distributing leaflets and mail to medical professionals and care organisations in the area.

They intend to meet three times a year to review requests for assistance.

Neil Fawcett, chairman of trustees said: “Families with disabled children and adults often face high levels of day-to-day stress and ill health.

“We honour Sylvia’s wishes and seek to help the deafblind and their carers by the awarding of financial assistance grants. These are enabling grants, which help people to access much-needed equipment, training and support.”
