MORE than 1,400 illegally imported cigarettes were seized in Calderdale.

Police and HM Revenue and Customs also confiscated 82 bottles of wine and more than 3kg of tobacco in a series of raids.

The operation was launched following concerns raised by residents.

Sgt Michael Bowden, of Calderdale police, said: “Although the vast majority of shops were found not to have any such goods for sale some did and so we have seized the items.

“I want to thank those who had no suspect goods for sale but warn those that did – and any other vendors who have the suspect goods for sale or are considering doing so – that we will take action.”
