A PENSIONER says she is a prisoner in her own home because Kirklees Council has refused to provide a ramp to allow access for a Motability scooter.

Margaret Parr, of Teddington Avenue in Dalton, is disabled and can only walk a short distance without sticks.

She rents a Motability scooter to allow her to shop in Huddersfield town centre.

But she is forced to take a taxi to get into town and for short trips, such as collecting her pension.

She says she can get a scooter of her own, but it will be no good without a ramp to allow her to get it into her house.

Mrs Parr said she had asked Kirklees Social Services to help her get a ramp installed a month ago.

But her request was refused.

She said: "I don't know why they refused. Now I am looking at four walls five or so days a week.

"When I do go out I have to take a taxi and it is very expensive.

"I spend £40 a week on taxis. I could get a scooter, but it is no good without the ramp."

A social services spokeswoman refused to discuss the refusal of Mrs Parr's request.

But she thanked the Examiner for bringing the matter to her attention and added: "We will be happy to talk to Mrs Parr about her individual circumstances and consider them against the criteria for providing a ramp."
