The independence referendum is upon us - next week, Scotland will vote on whether to become an independent country, or remain within the United Kingdom.

Polls are showing a close race between the Yes and No campaigns - while the Yes campaign urged voters to embrace an independent Scotland, Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Milliband headed north to tell Scottish voters that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are 'better together'.

If Scotland cries 'freedom' next Thursday, it could inspire more regions to wonder if they could go it alone.

Could Yorkshire work as an independent country? Barnsley poet Ian MacMillan seems to think so.

He told the BBC: "We have a word in Yorkshire, 'brussen', which means brass neck.

"We have that in huge quantities - that we're better than any other county.

"That's what an area needs if it wants to be independent."

Political party Yorkshire First, which contested this year's European elections, does not want independence for Yorkshire, but believes God's own country should have its own parliament.

It says: "Yorkshire has a larger population than Scotland and an economy twice the size of Wales, but with the powers of neither.

"We support the devolving of powers to the least centralised authority capable of addressing those matters effectively – within Yorkshire, the United Kingdom and Europe."
