Blossoming talent and the work of established artists will be on view this weekend when the Kirklees Open Studios Trail is staged.

Organised by arts organisation HOST, a string of workshops, demonstrations and master classes will be held.

Highlights include artist Jo Blaker, who will stage a drop-in session at Huddersfield Art Gallery tomorrow from 10am to 2pm, with fun games and arty activities for children, while printmaker Scarlette Homeshaw will be on hand in The Packhorse Gallery in Huddersfield town centre to showcase lino printing.

The Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield, will be the focus for a variety of events throughout the weekend.

HOST director Pam Lonsdale, said: “We are inviting everyone to try their hand at some art. It is a chance not only to look and appreciate art but to have a go yourself, hear about art and share the experience with others.

“With so many wonderful artists taking part in HOST and others around the district, it seemed a shame not invite them to join us for a whole week of events and do something a little different and make it a real celebration of the fantastic art work going on in Kirklees.”

Any adults who want to try their hand at sculpture can learn from Melanie Wilks, who is teaching stone carving in her Mill Street studio in Dewsbury on Saturday.

On Sunday, Elisa Etemad will teach visitors to the Byram Arcade how to make an origami crane to be part of an installation for the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust.

To kick-off the schedule, a preview week saw art walks across 10 venues in Huddersfield town centre, with pop-up or new exhibitions installed.

Free talks were also hosted at Huddersfield Art Gallery and Princess Alexandra Walk, featuring Slaithwaite painter Jane Galvin and Melanie Wilks alongside many others.

The Packhorse Gallery in Huddersfield town centre will showcase work by its members.

It is run by S2R, a Kirklees-based charity working to help promote positive mental health. Artists will be on hand to show their work and answer questions.
