CULINARY queen Sylvia Shaw is to launch a new cookbook at Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.
Mrs Shaw, from Almondbury, will launch the book at the festival tomorrow).
She will have a stall on New Street and, between 1pm and 2pm, will be showing off her talents with a cookery demonstration at the Piazza.
Her book, the Once A Week Cookbook, is all about recipes that can be made in one cooking session per week and then frozen to be reheated as nutritious evening meals during the busy working week.
Mrs Shaw, 62, knows all about being short of time – she has brought up four children. The youngest, 20-year-old Richard, still lives at home and benefits from his mum’s cooking.
Mrs Shaw said: “It’s such an easy system and involves cooking just once a week which is good for people who work or have busy lives.
“It’s also a lot better and cheaper than buying ready meals from a supermarket.”
Mrs Shaw works full-time in the office of Hepworth Building Products and, since 2006, has juggled this job with writing her book.
She said: “This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this. But I have wanted to bring out my own cook book for a very long time.”
Her book caught the attention of the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival organisers after it was featured inthe Examiner.
Cathy Burger, Huddersfield Town Centre manager, said: “We couldn’t miss an opportunity like this. We contacted Sylvia and she not only agreed to do a book signing but also to be involved with our cookery demonstration theatre.”
The festival began today and was opened at the Piazza by Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Karam Hussain.
It continues through to Sunday. Attractions include stalls selling pies, cheeses, pickles, pastries, preserves, real ales, wines and ice creams. An open-air food court offers delicacies from around the world.
Children will also be kept entertained with Victorian games, Tudor butter-making workshops and guided “bee” walks, which aim to teach kids about the importance of nature and the common bumble bee.
The festival is open from 10am to 6pm from Thursday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on the Sunday. For details, visit www.foodanddrinkfestvail.co.uk or contact 01484 487933.
