A CYCLIST who was badly hurt in a road accident is improving in hospital.

Kevin Ward (pictured), a member of Huddersfield Star Wheelers cycling club, was seriously injured in a collision with a car at a roundabout near Penistone.

The accident happened at 10.20am on Sunday on the Hoylandswaine roundabout where Halifax Road meets Manchester Road.

The 42-year-old married man from Skelmanthorpe ended up trapped beneath the car and had to be freed by firefighters.

He was flown by air ambulance to Sheff- ield's Northern General Hospital with serious internal injuries and dislocated hips.

At first South Yorkshire Police described his condition as "life- threatening."

A police spokesman said: "The cyclist is now in a stable condition in a high dependency unit."

Mr Ward organises the cycling club's hill climb in Jackson Bridge every year. He is also a keen time trialist over 10, 25 and 50 miles.

The car, a Nissan Micra, was being driven by a 46-year-old Manchester woman.

Witnesses should call the police on 0114 220 2970.
