AN innovative energy project in Kirklees has won a prestigious environmental award.

The award was presented to Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and Kirklees Council for their work on using renewable energy in residential properties.

TV botanist Dr David Bellamy is pictured presenting the award to Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing's energy officer Adrian Owen, at the Tower of London.

Solar panels have been installed in more than 500 houses and care homes, making it the largest domestic solar project in the UK.

Hundreds of people are benefiting from lower fuel bills.

Panels have also been installed on two schools in Huddersfield,

Clr Martyn Bolt, a member of Kirklees Council's Cabinet, said: "These awards are a recognition of the excellent work we do, and are continuing to do, to develop and deliver environmental projects here in Kirklees."

The project won a silver award for environmental best practice in the local authority section of the annual Green Apple Environment Awards.
