INQUIRIES are continuing into a moorland tragedy that claimed the life of a 52-year-old woman.

Police have yet to formally identify the woman, who was driving a Toyota Corolla car that came off the A6024 Holme Moss Road at Heyden Moor, south of Holme Moss, on Saturday night.

Firefighters from Meltham, Huddersfield and Holmfirth battled in vain to save her after the car fell into a steep-wooded ravine and caught fire at about 8.20pm.

The cause of the incident is not yet known.

The spot where the accident happened is on the border between West Yorkshire and Derbyshire and the incident is being dealt with by Derbyshire Police.

The woman’s car left the road on a stretch which is not protected by crash barriers.

Other sections of the road do have barriers.

The family have been informed of the woman’s death.
