RESIDENTS could save on their heating bills with free insulation.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet has been asked to commit £2.5m to the Community Energy Savings Programme.

The investment would pay for cladding, new boilers and better loft insulation in Golcar and Thornton Lodge and in three parts of Dewsbury – Chickenley, Savile Town and Eightlands.

All of the properties are classed as “hard to heat” because of their design.

The council’s Labour Cabinet will decide on Tuesday whether to back the plan. Councillors will also be asked to commit £90,000 to provide energy saving advice.

The suggestion came after research found that residents of small terrace houses in Huddersfield are paying an average of more than £2,000 a year on heating and the funding plans come on top of the council’s Warmzone scheme, which provided free insulation to thousands of homes across Kirklees.
