A small amount of damage was caused last night following a blaze at the indoor market in Queensgate.

Fire crews from Huddersfield and Brighouse were called to the fire at 8.30pm which attracted a big crowd.

Huddersfield watch commander Grahame Calcraft said: "The fire began in a kebab shop, totally destroyed it and spread to the roof.

"It totally smoke-logged the whole market. Because of the security arrangements we had to use road traffic cutting gear to get in."

And once the sprinkler system kicked in that caused a second wave of damage. The cause of the fire is said to be "accidental."

As soon as the crews finished dealing with that blaze they were called at 10pm to a fire at a skip company in Albert Street, Lockwood.

A lot of expensive conveyor equipment used for recycling was destroyed and the cause of the blaze is being investigated.
