THE search for Britain's best investor is over - and it's GP Michael Langton who is quids in.

The 42-year-old from Mirfield made an incredible 155% gain in a month.

Unluckily, it was a fantasy portfolio and not real money.

But Dr Langton does get his hands on a decent amount of cash for winning - £40,000 to be exact.

He is this year's champion in InvestaQuest, the stock-picking competition organised by the London Stock Exchange with Barclays Stockbrokers.

Dr Langton, whose practice is in Ossett, was given an initial portfolio of £50,000 in pretend money.

He turned it into £127,749 with a few good choices. He was nearly £6,000 clear of the runner-up.

Just 20 trades were available to him during the month.

Dr Langton, who calls himself an occasional investor, chose a few renewable energy companies such as Alkane Energy and Biofuels.

He admitted: "I wouldn't normally pick the kind of stocks that I chose for InvestaQuest.

"You have to go for high-risk stocks to stand a chance of winning over such a period of time."

He was presented with his prize at a ceremony in London.

Dr Langton added: "I might spend some of it on solar panels for the house.

"I think that's appropriate since I backed so many renewable energy stocks.

"But on the other hand my wife would like a fitted kitchen."
