SHE has spent 23 years entertaining pub customers on the piano.

But now Irene Morris has tinkled her last ivory at Huddersfield pub The Boy and Barrel.

Irene, 70, of Lockwood, has played the piano every Tuesday night at the Beast Market venue since 1981.

Her repertoire included everything from old-time music hall classics to Elvis Presley hits.

Irene was introduced to The Boy and Barrel in 1981 by a friend who worked there.

At the time she had already been playing piano at The Swan pub in Lockwood for 28 years.

She stopped playing there in 1985 when it was sold.

She said: "I had always played the piano and I just went to see what The Boy and Barrel was like one Tuesday.

I was there for the next 23 years! I've enjoyed it, it was lovely. I've made some great friends."

These friends include The Boy and Barrel's former owners, Johnny and Joe Marsden.

The brothers sold the pub 12 months ago and now run the Huddersfield Central Lodge hotel in Beast Market.

Earlier this month, they held a 70th birthday party for Irene. And when she decided to stop playing at The Boy and Barrel the brothers presented her with a bouquet.

Irene said: "They were always very generous. It was not the same at The Boy and Barrel after Johnny and Joe. It was a family thing with them.

"Some nights you'd get 14 or 15 singers, doing old- time stuff or Eurovision Contest songs.

"On Armistice Day, Johnny would put up flags and it was brilliant.

"I enjoyed every minute there."

Irene still plays the piano every Saturday at The Crown in Brighouse and has no plans to stop.

She said: "I joke that I keep trying to retire but they won't let me! My daughters keep saying don't you want to stop?

"Sometimes I do, but when I get there and play I love it. I'd be bored stiff sat at home."
