Police were called after travellers set up camp on Kirklees Council land at Lindley Moor yesterday .

Around 15 caravans moved onto playing fields in Lindley Moor Road after a padlocked chain was cut on a gate.

There were about 15 caravans with various vehicles, many of which were registered in County Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Travellers arrived about 2pm and police attended.

It is believed the travellers, who were staying in Northampton, plan to leave on Tuesday for Bristol.

It is the second time travellers have broken into a playing fields in just over two weeks.

Last month a group of travellers snapped a lock on a bollard guarding Reinwood recreation ground, about a mile away.

The group left a large amount of rubbish and four live chickens after leaving last Sunday.

However, it is not believed to be the same group of travellers.

At Lindley Moor, Bill Brown, who has a key for the padlocked gate to access his house, said he went out at lunchtime and returned to find travellers on the field.

Mr Brown said: “I got back at 3pm and they were already here.

“If they’re in communication there will be more. Their leader has told me their people won’t interfere. “I’m just worried about a mess being left.”

Lindley councillor Tony Brice was yesterday at the field which is Lindley Swifts rugby club’s training ground.

Clr Brice said: “It’s about time the Government brought in a law so we can evict them as soon as possible.

“The gate was chained up and when they come and create damage it’s not acceptable.

“I’ll be ringing the council first thing in the morning and asking for an injunction to move them on but that takes time.

“The council will have to pay for the injunction. These people aren’t daft and they know how to play the system.”
