PEOPLE who share the surname Ismay were gathering in Dewsbury today.
The event, at the Heath Cottage Hotel in Wakefield Road, has been organised by amateur historian Bill Harrison.
He married into the Ismay family and began researching the surname several years ago.
"The family gathering aims to build up information about the Ismay family," he said.
Mr Harrison, who is retired and lives in Lancaster, said the surname was thought to have originated in the Carlisle area.
He said there was a strong Ismay colony in Yorkshire and he was hoping to build the picture up.
The family includes some surprising characters, including Thomas Henry Ismay, founder of the pioneering luxury shipping company, the White Star Line, and his son, J Bruce Ismay, who was rescued from the Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 with the loss of more than 1,200 lives.
Later came Gen Sir Hastings Ismay, Churchill's defence chief during the Second World War.
Earlier was the Rev Joseph Ismay, who was Vicar of Mirfield from 1740 to 1778.
