STREETS in Huddersfield town centre are to get a new look after work which starts the week after next.

Trees, seats, new lights and better paving will be provided on some roads.

A major scheme will be carried out to turn part of Byram Street into a pedestrian-only zone.

Traffic arrangements will be altered on some other streets.

Officials say: "It's going to make the whole place look a lot better."

The work is the second phase of a scheme which has already seen changes in roads including John William Street.

Kirklees Council said it was part of a 10-year project to give the town centre a fresh look.

All the work is due to be completed by the end of this year.

A weekly construction programme will be posted so people can see what's going on.

It will be displayed on noticeboards at Byram Street and Macaulay Street.

A council spokeswoman said: "The objectives are to produce a more attractive environment, safer streets, improved access to facilities and more effective use of parking.

"It will all help to create a town centre that looks and works better," she added.
