EMLEY Show came back with a bang.

After two years of cancellation, caused by foot and mouth and torrential rain, the show returned to draw huge crowds.

The sun baked the thousands of people of all ages who packed into the showground at Litherop Lane on Saturday.

The crowd exceeded organisers' expectations of around 14,000.

Show chairman Mike Hall said: "I would say we are slightly in front of our attendance target. People have turned out in great numbers to support us. We are very pleased. It is good to be back."

Last year, torrential rain washed the event out.

And in 2001 the show was cancelled because of foot and mouth disease.

Mr Hall said he was pleased to see so many farmers willing to obey strict foot and mouth prevention rules to bring their animals to the show.

Goats, cattle and donkeys were shown, as well as a record number of horses.

Horses, shire horses and ponies wowed audiences with showjumping and other displays, across five areas of the showground.

Brian and Patricia Kilburn, of Birstall, visited the show for the first time in four years. They said their favourite section was the horse show.

Mr Kilburn, whose family farmed near Emley for years, said: "We always come to Emley Show."

Kirklees councillor Sheila Hey, who also sits on Denby Dale Parish Council, judged the shire horses.

She said: "It is brilliant. Just being involved again is nice."

Kirklees Mayor Clr Barbara Allonby was also at the event. It was her first visit to Emley Show.

She said: "It is good to see it so busy. I am very impressed."

Poultry, pigeons, cage birds, rabbits, hamsters, horticulture, craft, cookery and the children's sections all received many entries.

The honey section was extremely busy, as was the new Holme Valley Stickmakers' Guild stand, which visited the show for the first time.

Also new was the children's pet section and vintage tractor contest.

For those not entering the classes, there was plenty of entertainment.

Country crafts, farm produce, countryside clothing and equipment, fast food, machinery and cars were all on show or for sale.

Entertainment included music from Emley Brass Band, Bourbon Street Roof Raisers Jazz Band, Punch and Judy and a palmist.

Birds from The Owl Sanctuary and Park Rose Owls and Birds of Prey were also there.

A dog agility test was also held.

Joyce Houchin, of Woodlesford, near Leeds, and husband Peter brought 18-month-old grandson Thomas Armitage to his first show.
