HOLMFIRTH singer Sally French has written a special Christmas single.

Sally, a soprano singer and singing teacher, has written the track The Winter Snow to be broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds (92.4FM/744 AM) tomorrow at 9.45am.

Sally will be in the studio with DJ John Boyd when he plays the record.

Unfortunately, she has not had enough time to arrange for the single to be sold in stores as a Christmas record.

But she hopes to do so with a different Christmas song next year.

The Winter Snow started life as a non-festive track called The Dream Is Now.

But in October, BBC Radio Leeds DJ Liz Kershaw interviewed Sally and said it sounded like a festive song.

The station's producers told Sally that if she re-worked the song they would air it as a Christmas single.

Sally said: "I wrote fresh lyrics and the snow we had in November helped as inspiration.

"It's turned out to be something we are proud of and has worked really well."

Her sound engineer husband Peter Darley dubbed seasonal sleigh bells on to the track at their home studio in Holmfirth.

Four girls aged 11 and 12 sang backing vocals for the record.

They all attend the Sally French School of Singing.

The song was taken from Sally's new album, Tsunami, which she intends to release next year in HMV stores.

The album is a blend of classical and rock music.

In August, Sally achieved the rare feat of getting her current album, Destiny, stocked in HMV outlets - despite not having a record deal or management contract.

She says she is the only solo artist from Yorkshire to have an album in the rock and pop section at HMV.

She also claims she is the only UK female artist to have an album in HMV on her own record label.

She said: "If there is someone else out there, fine, but as far as I know I am right. I've spent a lot of time researching it."

Sally produces her records on her own Dragonfly Lake record label.

Destiny is currently on sale in nine HMV stores, including Huddersfield, Leeds, York, Sheffield and Bradford.

Sally plans to spend next year doing a live tour and is currently seeking sponsorship.
