HUDDERSFIELD is spicing up Britain.

New research shows shoppers in the town are leading a move towards hotter curries.

Sales of chicken Madras ready meals are up 13% in Huddersfield this year, putting it ninth in the nation.

Leeds is the spiciest place in the country, followed by Swindon and Birmingham.

Sainsbury’s supermarkets carried out the research to coincide with National Curry Week which started yesterday.

A spokeswoman said: “We are seeing a change in the amount of heat people like in their curries, a trend being led in part by shoppers in Huddersfield.

“Five years ago the korma – renowned for its mildness – was our top seller.

“But now we’re having to develop hotter curries to meet customer demand.”

Chicken Madras is now the UK’s favourite curry, pushing the milder chicken tikka masala into second place.
