VOLUNTEERS from engineering firm Cummins cleared invading weeds from Castle Hill.

Some 22 employees from the Aspley-based company, which makes turbos, cleared ragwort from the historic site.

The clearance was organised by Kirklees Council.

Under the Weeds Act 1959 the occupier of land has to take action to prevent the spread of common ragwort.

While the plant supports invertebrates and other wildlife, it is poisonous to animals.

Ragwort poses a particular threat in fields used to make hay.

Kirklees cabinet member for Streetscene, Clr Peter McBride, said: “Agricultural fields surround Castle Hill and it is important to try and control its spread so livestock are not affected.

“Continuing to work in partnership with Cummings Engineering through their community action initiative is certainly a positive thing to do for both wildlife and volunteers that come and work hard, not only for Castle Hill, but for other sites that Kirklees Streetscene manages.”
