A SCHEME in Huddersfield proves just how valuable rubbish can be for others.

For bikes that have been dumped in tips have been saved from landfill sites and turned into gleam machines for youngsters.

The old bikes have been fixed up good as new for a youngsters’ cycling scheme run by Kirklees Bike User Group.

It shows just how easily old bikes can be recycled and means that 60 youngsters from the Dalton, Rawthorpe and Leeds Road were able to take part in two cycling events in Huddersfield.

Some have been given the bikes to keep and youngsters from Dewsbury Moor have also benefited from the scheme. Since the scheme began in March, 120 bikes have been given away.

One bike is raffled off for free at every event run by Kirklees Bike User Group.

KBUG and staff from Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) got the youngsters together at the Galpharm Stadium and NetherhallLearning Campus in Rawthorpe.

As well as having some cycling proficiency training, the youngsters also had free bike repairs and the older ones took part in a bike ride along Kilner Bank.

KBUG mechanics repaired nearly 100 bikes salvaged from local tips for the children to use.

Sharon Donaghy, the estate management officer for estates in Dalton, Rawthorpe and Leeds Road areas covers the area on bicycle every day.

She said: “On the day after the event I saw loads of children playing out on their bikes.

“It was brilliant to see them out and about enjoying themselves and getting exercise instead of staying indoors.”

The events were funded by the Dalton & Rawthorpe B Fit scheme and supported by Rawthorpe Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, which provided food and refreshments.

KBUG recycle old bikes and can always use donations.

So if you have an old, outgrown or unused bike, please consider donating it rather than making a trek to the tip to dump it.
